Who I work with
General therapy
Ordinary, good therapy for people carrying something heavy, and for people who are not yet sure what to call it.
What brings people in
Most of my work is this. Not a specialty, not a programme, just steady therapy with one clinician who knows your history. People arrive with something specific, or with a general sense that things are not working, and both are reasons enough.
- Depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD
- Grief and loss
- Anger
- Burnout and chronic stress
- Relationship and family problems
- Loneliness
- Caregiver stress
- Major life and career transitions, including retirement
- Perfectionism, shame, guilt, and boundaries
- Questions about identity, meaning, and what comes next
Some of those have diagnoses. Many do not, and you do not need to decide which category you are in before you call.
Everyone can benefit from therapy says more about that, if it is the thing holding you back.
When I'm not the right therapist
One of the more important things a therapist can tell you is that they are not the right person for this.
Therapists are unusual in that we're professionally and ethically obligated to recognize the limits of our competence. I take that obligation seriously.
I've been doing this work for a long time, but longevity doesn't make someone an expert in everything. Some problems require specialized training. Others require a treatment setting or level of support that I don't provide. And occasionally, I know enough about myself to recognize that another clinician can offer you something I can't.
That's not rejection. It's good clinical care.
If that is where we land, I will say so on the first call rather than three months in, and I will not leave you to start the search from nothing.
How the work goes
I have been in behavioral healthcare for my entire professional life. My breadth of experience in clinical delivery, psychiatry, and acute settings provides a strong theoretical and clinical foundation for a wide variety of clients and presentations.
In the first session we work out what you want to be different and how we will know when we get there. After that it is regular sessions, a plan we both understand, and periodic honesty about whether it is helping.
