Payment is due at the time of each session. I accept cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, HSA and FSA cards, ACH transfer, and PayPal.

A brief call to see whether we are a fit costs nothing, and it is worth having before you commit to anything. What that call is not is a session. The first session is a full session, billed at the usual rate, and we spend it establishing what you want to change and how we will know when we are done.

In our first session, we will discuss your treatment goals and the likely cost of your care. Therapy is a commitment of time and resources; we will work together to establish the right care plan for you.

This is a cash practice

I am not enrolled with any insurance plans in my private practice, and I do not bill insurance. You pay for every session directly.

That is a real cost, and it is worth being clear about what it buys. Nothing about your care is submitted to a health plan: no claim, no diagnosis code, no treatment record, no utilization review deciding how many sessions you are allowed. What we work on, and for how long, is decided between us.

Using your out-of-network benefits

If your plan has out-of-network benefits, most of the work of using them is handled for you. I provide superbills through Mentaya, which checks what your plan covers, files the claim with your insurer, and follows it up. You do not have to phone your plan, decode the answer, or post anything yourself.

It takes a couple of minutes and tells you what you are actually working with. Some plans reimburse a good portion of outpatient mental health care and some reimburse none, so this is worth doing first rather than finding out later.

Mentaya charges you 5% of whatever your plan reimburses. If a claim recovers nothing, there is nothing to pay. That fee is theirs, not mine, and I receive no part of it.

The superbill itself carries the appropriate CPT code for the service and everything else your carrier needs.

One thing to decide deliberately

A superbill carries a diagnosis, because insurers require one, and filing a claim creates a record of that diagnosis with your insurer. Nothing reaches a health plan from me. A claim you file, through Mentaya or otherwise, does. For most people that is a fair trade for the reimbursement. For some, given their work, it is not. Make it a deliberate choice rather than the default.

Good Faith Estimate

Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost when you are not using insurance to pay. Since this is a cash practice, that applies to everyone I see. I will provide one in writing before we begin, and you can request one at any time. If a final bill is at least $400 more than your estimate, you have the right to dispute it.

Cancellation policy

Cancel at least 24 hours ahead and there is no charge. Inside 24 hours, the full fee is due.

A text is a perfectly good way to cancel. You do not need to call, and you do not need to explain.
