Cub Valley Counseling

For individuals

Counseling

Sixty-minute sessions by telehealth, anywhere in Colorado or California. One clinician who knows your history, rather than a rotating panel.

Who tends to find their way here

Most of what I do is ordinary, good therapy. Five areas are not ordinary, and they are the reason people travel a long way to find me.

General therapy

Depression, trauma and PTSD, stress and burnout, relationship and family difficulty, transitions, grief. Adults and adolescents.

First responders

Over a decade in correctional health, patrol and co-responder services, plus academy and critical incident training across the Western US. Culturally competent in the sense that matters.

Executives and clinical leaders

Twenty-six years mentoring executives, physicians, clinical leaders and providers. Work that assumes competence rather than treating it as a symptom.

Parents of children with autism and developmental disabilities

I am the parent of two children with autism. This is here because I have lived the thing you are describing.

Men's issues

Sex, shame, anger, rejection, loneliness, competition, money, failure. The things some men would rather say to another man.

Parents of a child with serious mental illness

Whether your child is 14 or 66. Grounded in years spent in inpatient psychiatric, emergency, correctional and forensic settings, where mental illness is at its most acute.

How the work goes

I take a solutions-focused approach, but I also provide education and resources to help you understand your challenges and build skills you can use long-term. If you are looking to reconnect with your inner child, I am not the provider for you. If you are looking to manage the symptoms and behaviors that hold you back from your goals, let us get to work.

That is a direct way to put it, and it is meant to save us both a wasted month rather than to turn anyone away. If you are not sure which description fits you, call and we will work it out on the phone.

First, a text

Text me and we will set up a short call, at no charge, to see whether I am the right fit for what you are dealing with. That call is not a session. The first session is a full session, and we use it.

The first session

We review your goals and challenges and develop a plan to address them. We go over costs, how long we want to work together, and clearly define when we will consider our work complete.

Then, the work

Sixty-minute sessions at a frequency we agree on. We review progress against the plan and change course if it is not helping.

Licensure decides where I can practice

Therapy is regulated by the state you are physically in during the session, not the state you usually live in. I hold an LCSW in Colorado and in California, so I can see you if you are located in either one. If you are elsewhere, I am happy to help you find someone licensed where you are.
